Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are essential first aid tools for hospital staff, paramedics and even non-medical professionals. Glenmed Professional Healthcare Solutions provides a step-by-step guide on how to use them.
What Is An AED And How Do You Use It?
An AED is a safe and easy-to-use device that delivers a mild, therapeutic electric shock to the heart of a person suffering a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). They are mobile and can be found, not only in hospitals and ambulances, but also on the walls of public venues and places of business around the world.
Although these are important pieces of medical equipment, they are do intended only for the use of medical professionals. Anybody can be trained to use them by going through just a few easy steps. Here is your step-by-step guide to using an AED.

1. Power on the AED
Grab the AED from its storage position, place it near the victim’s head and power on the unit. Some models must be switched on, while others turn on automatically when you lift the lid. An AED can be used on a person of any age.

2. Apply The AED Pads
Next, place one pad on the right side of the victim’s chest, just below the collarbone, and the other directly across on the left-hand side of the chest. If the pads are not already connected to the AED, connect them. You can apply the pads while another rescuer is administering CPR. In fact, you should not stop CPR to apply the pads. The AED will prompt you to stop CPR when it is ready to analyse the heart rhythm.
3. Clear The Victim And Administer The Shock
When the AED prompts you to deliver the shock, first make sure that nobody is touching the victim or his/her clothing. Check along the entire length of the victim’s body and make sure nobody is touching the victim. Shout “Everybody clear!” and then push the button for the shock to be delivered.
An AED is a handy and easy-to-use tool which could very well help you save someone’s life.
